cool youtube channels
- hazel - this is embarrassing but i owe a huge debt to her videos. i covet her swag!! im just a wannabe!! its ok though im learning to synthesize my own swag via experiencing life. as is the custom in:re influence. anyway, hazel is (oddly enough) a kind of Scott the Woz where her videos seem to take place in a unique world unmoored from ordinary life; and the "world" portrayed in her videos, whatever that means, is oddly aspirational to me, whatever that means. like i guess i didnt realize you could be otaku (TL: otaku means nerd) like that. insert clip here from idol / girl band / magic show of main character as child seeing idol / band / magician performing live and getting stars in their eyes. also i like her music
- bunch of friends - does a great job at porting the "funny friends hanging out" formula of television into youtube in a way that appeals to me; downstream of ntbts on that front!
- The Library of Letourneau - clips of northernlion streams. northernlion is funny and librarian (clipper) is funny. i think me and librarian have a similar kind of referential bingo sort of humor. watch if you like your slop verbose and weirdly scared of angry mobs beating it off. this post explains him better than i ever could
- GATEKEEPING THIS ONE BECAUSE I DONT WANT TO GIVE UNDUE TRAFFIC TO IT EVEN THOUGH IM MORE OBSCURE THAN THEM IT JUST FEELS LIKE LEAKING A FRIENDS HOUSE ADDRESS - a kind of pre instagram tiktok hyperfixation-based shitpost humor i greatly cherish. the holy lovechild of YTPs a la joel vinesauce mixed with modern free video editing software
- 3blue1brown - math videos; no, i don't understand a lot of the videos but they're pretty and i bet they'd hit if you're high. allegedly. i only did one weed and i think i was "destroyed by hippie powers" ykwim
- joel haver - made 12 movies in 12 months, is a champion of indie filmmaking outside the hollywood system. used to make a video every week before that. a particular kind of absurdism in his sense of humor that really appeals to me. all his stuffs improvised (i.e. no traditional script), so of course it reminds me of a more polished improv scene; like, in theater class we'd have improv every friday and it'd be really funny in this specific way that joel kinda gets at.
- ceicocat - the inside mari video spoke to me
- CJ the X - they synthesize information in a way that demands attention and isn't boring; i get a sense of there being a clear, defined worldview and a steadfast commitment to it behind every video, and its like, you know, seductive; makes me wanna live better and be nicer and do stuff. i think it is because i am early 20s (unaware of things that have been discussed extensively)
- bill wurtz - most people know him for the history of the world videos but his other videos are good too. breaks through the barrier between stupid and profound, in a way thats like, inadvertently really germane to the youtube environment.
- ljot swanhild - vtuber but like in the classical definition of a virtual youtuber. idk how to describe her other than she makes intuitive sense. short chaotically edited videos where she and her other characters interact
- Odette BALBc - in a similar vein to ljot swanhild except shes a mousegirl and its slower paced
- Professor Skye's Record Review - big fan of people yapping about music with tangential asides. quite like tangents. charmingly unpolished, which makes you realize how good this guy is at yapping; he's a professor after all!
- Petscop - petscop is about a weird mysterious (fictional) game, which we explore through lets plays. it was a comforting rock in my life while it was still ongoing.
- Tom Scott - no-nonsense videos about stuff that is interesting. notable for the attention to detail and level of care taken to make the absolute best video about a thing that is interesting. loosely, two categories of video: the explainer and the one where he goes to the thing that is interesting and maybe talks to some people. watched a random news story from the BBC once and realized, oh; that's where he gets it!
- Daniel Hentschel - cocky want boing boing guy
- Action Button - talks about video games weird to the point you have to think about it. the more you think about it the more you discover these weirdly specific layers to the whole presentation until you feel like you're in on a secret. reviews i like: the cyberpunk one, the boku no natsuyasumi one, the tokimeki memorial one.
- rocco botte / mega64 - i sort prefer rocco botte's stuff from the other members of mega64 but make no mistake their stuff is also funny. i just adore how they commit to bits for years and years (especially on their personal channels) to the point of being incomprehensible to someone who hasn't been following along. also a clear "edited on adobe premiere pro CS6" vibe across everything i adore.
- neil cicierega - neil cicierega's influence on internet cannot be overstated. you should go through his other videos too. go watch the new kids on the rock stuff
- jack stauber - catchy jingles / songs animated in a distinct retro style. this was before people called anything that was old analog horror
